How Cities and Anchor Institutions Can Work Together

February 21, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

City leaders and local anchor institutions – such as hospitals/health systems and universities – face similar concerns about the health and wellbeing of their communities. Cities and anchor institutions both do well when the people in their communities thrive and reach their full potential. Each offers assets and resources that, when aligned and leveraged, can amplify their impact on the factors that influence how well we live and how long we live. Those factors include access to affordable, healthy housing, transportation, good jobs, quality education, etc. Through anchor approaches, the opportunity exists to improve the wellbeing of city residents. Anchors institutions are enduring organizations that are rooted in their localities. Leveraging these stable institutions can address critical issues in communities through their hiring, purchasing and contracting practices. Elected officials are natural conveners and have influence well beyond their formal authority. Yet city-anchor partnerships are rare, despite the promise they offer. Join the National League of Cities and the Anchor Institutions Task Force in this first in a series of web forums to explore opportunities for cities and their anchor institutions to work together in building a Culture of Health.
