Linkages between Food Insecurity, SNAP and Health Care

Food insecurity has significant health implications for low-income individuals in the United States, contributing to greater likelihood of depression, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and poor overall health. Food assistance programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), can play an important role in alleviating food insecurity and contributing to improved health outcomes, and thereby decreasing the cost of health care.
