This word document provides a template for creating a “Basic” wellness policy that can be adapted to meet your district’s wellness priorities. This template meets the minimum Federal standards for local school wellness policy implementation under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation Healthy Schools Program “Bronze”-level recognition criteria, and minimum best practice standards accepted in the education and public health fields. Where appropriate, the template includes optional policy language school districts can use to establish a stronger policy that meets the Healthy Schools Program “Silver” or “Gold” levels. School districts should choose policy language that meets their current needs and also supports growth over time.
Hunger Solutions strives to maximize participation in, and support for, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the School Breakfast Program (SBP), and the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Hunger Solutions New York develops and distributes information and resources for community-based organizations and agencies to use to further the fight against hunger and advocates at the federal, state, and local levels for policies that increase access to nutrition assistance programs and contribute to ending hunger. Hunger Solutions New York manages the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program and the Long Island Anti-Hunger Initiative. Both programs are designed to provide education, support, and assistance connecting New Yorkers to SNAP and other resources to end hunger.
The CDC’s Healthy Schools section includes a multitude of resources on the nutrition environment, physical activity, obesity prevention, and chronic conditions. These resources include: data, tools, trainings, school health guidelines, local school wellness policy, state programs, resources for parents, and information on the link between health and academics.
